They say that motherhood reveals a new side to your personality, a side that you’ve never experienced before. While it’s true that being responsible for another life can genuinely change yours and the way you perceive your contribution to society, there is something that every pregnant woman can agree on. You develop a variety of almost magical and superhuman talents when you expect a baby. Here are the top 5 skills you certainly didn’t have before you got pregnant.
#1. YOU’VE GOT A NEW EYE FOR DECOR
When you’re expecting a baby, the first thing you think about is to prepare the house for the new member of the family. The nursery room is the place to start when you want to explore your newly found interior design skills set. From Moses baskets to soft colour palettes, it’s fair to say that future mothers are very creative when they set the room of their baby. In fact, it’s fair to say that you’ve probably never taken interior decor so seriously before. Everything has to be perfect for your baby, and naturally, the nursery becomes the most elegant room in the entire home!
#2. YOU’RE A STYLIST
If you’ve never been much into DIY, you may join the ranks of knitting mums from the moment you discover you’re expecting. Knitting, indeed, is a favourite hobby for future mothers. Firstly, it is easy to pick up – you can ask your local wool shop to give you some lessons, or you can follow a few tutorial videos. But more importantly, there’s no feeling that fully matches the pride and joy when your baby can wear the clothes you’ve made.
#3. NUTRITION HAS NO SECRET FOR YOU
You might not have paid a lot of attention to what you put on your plate in the past, but when you get pregnant, you develop a hyper-awareness of healthy eating. In fact, you can probably identify unpasteurised cheeses just by smell, as these could be potentially harmful to your baby. You start consuming high quantities of fruits and vegetables; all heavily washed before eating. Medium rare meat becomes a distant memory: you take your meat well-done, with no fat on the side.
#4. YOU’RE TOTALLY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR BODY
Listen to your body. If until now the saying was meaningless to you, you suddenly discover your secret superpower. You can listen to the body that grows inside yours. You even tell your friends and relatives that your baby knows when your watching your favourite TV show and is relentless during emotional scenes. You can tell which music they will like based on how they react to the latest radio hits. In short, you believe you have the skills of a clairvoyant.
#5. YOU DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO READ SCANS
Unless you’re medically trained, baby scans never give you a clear idea of what your baby will be like. But, as a mom-to-be, you feel you can already tell he’s got your eyes just by looking at the blurry dot on your 4.5 weeks scan. And nobody is going to tell you otherwise!
Are all new pregnancy skills real skills? You will probably laugh at these in a few years’ time. But while you’re expecting, these skills are as real as they can be. In fact, it would be unfair to say that expecting mothers don’t learn anything during their pregnancy. Without your baby, you wouldn’t know how to knit!
