It was recently my birthday and Mr T did really well in that he got me a subscription to Makerly. A monthly craft subscription for people like me who just like to make stuff! Each month you get a kit which will hold everything you need for a craft project.
This month it was the turn of Moroccan style basket weaving or coil weaving. Here’s how I got on.
SIMPLE BASKET WEAVING
The team from Makerly have created a really cute design based on the traditional baskets of Morocco. Having visited for our anniversary a few years ago, I was really excited to give this a go. The kit contained everything I needed for one mini basket, right the way down to the needles required.
This style of basket weaving was really simple. You wrap the rope contained in the kit with embroidery thread. Coil by coil – ensuring you attach it to the level below as you go – a little basket is created.
The Makerly basket weaving kit is so simple and easy to follow with clear instructions and pictures: I was impressed! With regards to the craft itself…I have to be honest. It just took so long!! It probably took around 8 hours to make my little basket including the lid. Granted that included needing to unwind and then re-wrap the lid as it just didn’t look right.
Now don’t get me wrong. I loved it and really enjoyed creating my little basket. And I have to say that I am rather pleased by the end result. Not that I have much chance of keeping hold of it as the Bear has already ear marked it to hold her necklaces in her room
However, will I bet taking up basket weaving as my main craft love? No, I don’t think so. Purely down to the time it takes to create. The more I think about it though, the more I can think of little projects that I could use this basket weaving technique for. Little baskets as Christmas gifts, table mats and coasters as well as wall decorations. Therefore, I guess never say never as I think there may be a project or two in my future using this!
HOW TO TRY BASKET WEAVING YOURSELF
If you wanted to give this kind of basket weaving a go yourself, I’ve managed to track down the following resources:
Makerly supplies past boxes for as long as stocks last. So, if you fancy giving this a go then this kit would provide you with everything you need with no further investment required. However, you’ll need to be quick!
As you can imagine there are seriously a ridiculous amount of videos on YouTube but I found the best search terms to be ‘coiled bowl’ with these videos on how to start your bowl and then how to finish it to be good ones.
I’ve found a book available on Amazon (affiliate link) on Practical Basketry Techniques. Let me be clear, I’ve not read it but it does look like it includes instruction on how to weave in this way.
Have you ever tried this kind of basket weaving? What did you think?
