This morning I woke up to the news that the world has gone made about Harper Beckham. Is she ill? Is she injured? Is she neglected? No….she has a dummy (heaven forbid!). NHS guidelines state that children should not have dummies until breastfeeding is well established and should be removed between 6 and 12 months.
Because, y’know, parenting is a black and white topic with a one size fits all approach don’t you know!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t particularly like them and never thought I would give my child a dummy. Until I had a child that screamed in her car seat (and I mean inconsolable sobbing) and just would not sleep. The dummy helped, hence why she still has one even now at 10 months hold. Quick, call the police – my child has a dummy!
Now I know I am going over the top as the “issue” people have with Harper Beckham is the fact that she still has a dummy at 4 years old, but what I am trying to say is that we don’t know the reasons she still has is. I’ve tried to take the dummy off the bear but she needs it to fall asleep as she just can’t manage to get herself to sleep without it. She doesn’t have it at any other time other than sleep or in the car – never has – and once asleep she spits it out so she just needs it to tip her over the edge. She doesn’t always need it, but it’s there to help, just in case she needs it.
Is there an alternative? Absolutely but I refused to enter into sleep training and cry it out methods – I don’t judge those that do as every parent knows their own child best – but personally I think that would do the bear more damage than a dummy. We’ll get rid of it once she no longer needs it to help her sleep but we learnt the hard way that before that stage just seems cruel when she needs it for sleep. Hopefully that will be by 18 months, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
David Beckham has quite rightly hit back at the media as the Paparazzi Parents have no right to judge him as a parent. He knows his daughter and her needs and in his opinion she needed her comforter. Leave the man alone.
