Finding Our Rhythm (Time)

We’ve tried a lot of classes with the Bear and they always start the same way. She sits quietly for a few weeks, unsure about everything as she’s pretty shy and it takes her a little while to warm up. We then have a few weeks of her having a great time and getting involved. Next, we get to the stage where she starts to get bored. And when she gets bored she gets disruptive.

We’ve tried a lot of classes over the past year or so with varying success, so when the guys from Rhythm Time got in contact for us to try theirs, we thought why not.


I was a little hesitant at first as the classes are a lot more structured than I was expecting. Filled full of songs and music, there is a lot of listening that comes with the class too. However, I needn’t have been worried as she seemed to thrive under the structure and loved it. It had enough of a routine, so she knew what was coming, but not enough where it was too predictable.

Her favourite aspects were the ‘what’s in the box’ section of the class where they sing a certain song, knock on the box and learn what’s inside. She also had a particular attachment to Rat-a-tat: a rat in a hat, which she looked forward to seeing every week and always spoke about when we got home. Him on the other hand just loved exploring the sounds and making as must noise as possible.

The class was a mixed age group which was perfect for us with a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, as it meant they could both enjoy the class together and that I could watch them play doing the same thing for a nice change. The class we attended was at 9:30am which is good as it means it doesn’t get in the way of nap time, but we live in a pretty rural location so seeing as it took us 40 minutes to get to the class it was a little early for us which became apparent after a few weeks.

I loved the little name tags that all children got in the class, as it meant they were referred to by name and felt a little more involved. It also helped me as I am awful with names, so it avoided that awkward ‘I’ve forgotten your child’s name’ situation. The only issue was that it took 4 weeks for them to spell the Bears name right which was a little disappointing as it meant she had a little handwritten one scribbled at the beginning of each class, but we got there in the end. Another lovely little bonus to the classes was the Rhythm Time CD which is included with each toddler course, which helped to keep the song fresh in their minds during the week between classes.

At £5 a class, this is an affordable option for anyone looking for an interactive session with their child which is hands on and a lot of fun. That is per child though, as there is no sibling discount which puts the price up to £10 per week for us. That added to the distance we needed to travel meant that we decided not to renew for next term. However, for anyone who lives a little closer, Rhythm time is a great option.

And then before you know it, you’ll own two kazoos’ and the kids will be making as much noise as physically possible all the way home.
