I have a 2 year old a 10 month old so needless to say we are a family that are big fans of toys and are are always on the look out for something new. This is when we came across The Storytellers from Toyella.
Beautifully made wooden figure puppets, the collection is made up of a king, a queen, a knight and a wizard. They come complete with a pop up cardboard castle and are perfect for imaginative play.
Although she’s a little under the recommended age, Darcie loved them on sight as I knew she would. She’s hit that age now where she is really enjoying imaginative play and immediately demanded that they be taken out of the box. What followed was a good few hours of role playing where she insisted on being the ‘pink princess’ and proceeded to go in an out of the castle with her colourful friends.
The characters are very well made and have beautiful bold colours. Simple in design this is perfect for play, but what was very intersting is that Darcie immediately decided that the queen who is pink in colour is a girl and the king, knight and wizard who are red, grey and blue respectively are all boys. It just goes to show how early gender stereotypes seem to be assigned to colours in childrens minds. We have managed to compromise though and decide that the grey knight can be a girl too.
We both love the fact that the Storytellers are puppets and had great time getting them to speak to one another. I only understood about half of the conversations that they had together but by listening in, it sounded like they were all having a great time!
I love these little people and love the fact they are a traditional wooden toy that encourages imagintive play. Bold and bright in design, they are perfect in their simplicity. At under £25 I think they are a lovely gift idea and would be perfect for any child that is starting to enjoy role playing and imaginative play.
