Close To You by Kerry Wilkinson – book review
AD | review
This is a great autumn read and one to curl up inside with a hot drink on a cold evening. Filled with twist that will keep your wondering until the final chapters, this one will have you doubting the narrators sanity!
Read on for my full review.
THE BLURB
I pinch the screen to zoom until I’m staring at the face of a ghost. A man with very short hair, staring directly at the camera with piercing brown eyes.
He is as he was when I last saw him: wrinkles around the corners of the eyes and a knowing smirk. That’s the expression I see when I can’t sleep.
My body tenses. It can’t be him. It’s not my ex-husband. It’s not David.
I know that better than anyone because he didn’t walk out on me.
He didn’t disappear two years ago and he’s not a missing person.
I know that for a fact because I’m the one who killed him.
CLOSE TO YOU – MY THOUGHTS
This is a brillant book that keeps you guessing from start to finish. Morgan is a success in the fitness industry but she hides a terrible secret. Two years ago she killed her husband. However, it seems that the dead won’t stay buried…
I was immediately drawn to the plot on this one and it didn’t dissapoint.
Set in two time periods, we first of all have the “NOW”. It seems that Morgan’s dead husband is back but how is that possible? It keeps you guessing as to who could be playing with her so coldly all the way up to the final page. Wondering why someone would do such a thing really keeps the pace of the book going.
The second time period “WHY”, is set the past exploring everything that happened in the lead up to that fatefull night. Although intresting to understand, I have to admit I liked this Morgan least. I just don’t understand what she saw in David at all to begin with. Then – once married – why she stayed. You could maybe think it was manipulation but I don’t think so as she never seems to be under his spell at all. This made him seem like a means to an end in the story rather than a fully developed character. Having said that though, Close To You keeps you gripped page after page. Full of twists and turns, I didn’t see the final twist coming at all!
I will say though that I found it really hard to remember much about what I was reading unless I was actually reading it. It’s hard to explain but basically I just couldn’t remember much about the book, no matter how hard I tried. As soon as I started reading again, I could recall it all getting lost in the story once again. I don’t know if that is a reflection of the ease of Wilkinson’s writing style or the speed at which I was reading to find out what happened next, but it was very odd. And not at all a reflection on how gripping Close To You is.
Close To You is currently available on Amazon for a bargain £1.99 (affiliate link).
