Sewing Crafts Ideas to Get the Kids Excited
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
Sewing isn’t just for attaching buttons and fixing holes you know? It’s one of the most creative hobbies anyone can have, and an amazing life skill rolled into one, so getting your kids to have a go with the needle and thread, or maybe even the sewing machine, is a great way to keep the screens at bay, and here are some fun projects that will definitely tempt them.
Superhero Capes to the Rescue!
Let’s start off with a bang—or should we say, a swoosh? Superhero capes! Grab some colourful fabric, or better yet, some old curtains that haven’t seen the light of day since 1998, and get crafting. This project is simple, requires minimal accurate stitching, so you won’t even need your trusty Janome sewing machines, and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to run around the house pretending to fly?
Quirky Cushions: Let’s Get Stuffed
Moving on to something a bit more cushy. Why not have a go at making some quirky cushions? We’re talking about bright colours, funky patterns, and perhaps an unusual shape or two (think star-shaped, heart-shaped, or even a giant ice cream cone). It’s a great way for the kids to add a personal touch to their bedrooms and show off their handiwork to unsuspecting guests.
Friendly Felt Monsters
Who needs store-bought toys when you can make your own friendly felt monsters? With some felt sheets, a few buttons for eyes, and stuffing, your kids can create their own mini-monster army to take over the playroom. Plus, stitching these little critters can be a fab way for kids to learn basic sewing skills.
Patchwork Pizzazz
Here’s one for the kids who like to mix and match. Patchwork! It’s like a puzzle, but with fabric. Dig through your scrap fabric bin (or raid Grandma’s, with permission) and challenge the kids to create a patchwork masterpiece. They could make a blanket, a wall hanging, or even a funky jacket that shouts, “I made this!” at anyone who glances their way.
Fashion Forward: Design Their Own Tote Bag
For the environmentally conscious and fashion-savvy youngster, designing and sewing their own tote bags can be a hit. Not only is it a practical craft that hones their sewing skills, but it also gives them something they can use every day. Whether they go for a minimalist look or decide to slap every fabric scrap and ribbon they can find on there, it’s a craft that’s as fun as it is useful.
Dolly Dress-up Time
If your kids love dolls, then you know what they will love even more? Sewing their very own dolly that is totally customised to their tastes. Som whether they want a blonde dolly in a gingham dress or a dark-haired doll with blue eyes wearing dungarees, they can have it, and it is sure to become their most treasured childhood possession!
Sewing is a great skill to learn and a great way to keep the kids entertained, so why not do both with one of these fun sewing crafts?
