Help Your Kids With School: 5 Great Ways
1. Ask Questions
Before you can actually help your kids with school, you’ll need to know what’s actually going on. Parent/teacher meetings help with this, and that’s what they’re designed for. The key to this is making sure you ask questions and find out the information you need to know. Don’t just stick to parent/teacher meetings with this.
Ask questions whenever you need to. The school should be more than happy to answer them. You should also ask your kids how they’re doing at school. Don’t just focus on the academic side. Ask about how they’re coping and doing outside of academics, too.
2. Give Them Extra Support Before Exams
There’ll be plenty of times when your kids will have exams at school. These are to test your child’s knowledge and make sure they’re learning what they’re supposed to learn. Despite the best of intentions, these can often cause anxiety in kids. They could struggle with preparing for the exams and making sure they don’t fail.
Take the time to support your kids in the lead-up to exams. If they’re anxious, relax them and make sure they’re not overwhelmed. You could even help them study so they’re better prepared. Make sure you create a calming environment that actually helps them study.
3. Use Available Resources
One of the main reasons you could struggle with helping your kids at school is you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. You could feel like you don’t have the resources to help them. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be the case. You’ll have more resources at your disposal than you’d think.
From learning to write to syllable awareness, you can find many of these online. It’s just a matter of actually taking advantage of them. Once you do, you’re in a better position to actually help your kids. You’ve no reason not to use them.
4. Make Sure They Get Homework Done
Countless kids complain about homework every day, as they don’t see much of a point in it. It’s a lot more important than they’d realize, however. It’s why they’re given homework to do in the first place. Make sure they get this done when they need to. There are plenty of reasons for this.
It helps them properly learn the lessons they had in school. There are several ways you can help with this. Make sure there aren’t any distractions and your kids have a clutter-free area to do their homework. If they need help, then help, but avoid doing it for them.
5. Voice Concerns
There could be times when you have concerns with your child’s education. A lot of this could revolve around problems your kids are having in school. Many of these could be outside of your child’s control. This could impact how they perform in school, and even affect their mental health.
If you think this happens with your child, voice your concerns to the school. Be clear with what the concerns are, and make sure they’re properly addressed. Once you do, your child should have much fewer problems, and they’ll start doing better in school.
