Helping Your Child Transition from Nursery to Big School
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
Heading to big school can be a big jump for some children, especially if they find themselves a bit shy or more reserved than other kids. However, it’s important to remind your child that they’ll be able to come out of their shell over time with the transition to a new school, new people to meet and new subjects to explore.
To help them with the move, here are some tips from a private nursery in London.

Take them to school yourself for the first week
In order to test the waters, and to figure out the usual commute to school without much hassle for yourself, you can take your child to school yourself. They will feel comfortable with you by their side and as you wave them away at the gates, who will see a friendly teacher on site to help them on their first week.
You may only live a stone’s throw away from the school, which makes it really easy for your child to head into school, or your child may need a lift every day anyway, but showing that you care is what matters here.
Provide your child with rewards to look forward to after school
Your child may have had a long day at school and is ready to unwind or play at home. Motivate your child to feel happy about school with the prospect of new and exciting activities for them to try after a hard day of work. They’ll feel much more motivated to work on their skills in school with the prospect of a nice reward at the end of their day, and they’ll be able to test the skills they’ve recently learnt in new ways.
Similarly with rewarding your child, they could receive a new toy or a pack of their favourite sweets for a job well done on their first week. Show them how proud you are of their progress from nursery to big school, and they’ll feel very motivated to succeed.
