Fire breathing toilet roll dragons | kids crafts
It’s been a while since I’ve written up a kids craft, but this is something we made these fire breathing toilet roll dragons this week, so I thought I’d share. Mess free but with plenty elements that little hands can get involved in, we all enjoyed making these.
I originally got the idea from Pinterest but after struggling to find a link to a site with instructions that worked, I thought I would simply make our own.
WHAT YOU NEED
- toilet roll tube
- coloured paper (I used green)
- coloured tissue paper (I used fire colours)
- scissors
- double sided tape
- small pom poms
- googly eyes
HOW TO MAKE YOUR FIRE BREATHING DRAGON
First up you’re going to cover your toilet roll tube with coloured paper. You could paint it but I wanted to reduce the mess so went with the double sided tape and paper method.
I also left the ends a little long so I could fold them over and tuck them in the end of the tubes. This just gave them a much neater finish.
Next up we need to add the fire. This is done really easily by just adding a ring of double sided tape around the inside of one end of the toilet roll tube. Little ones can then add strips of coloured tissue paper to give the effect of fire.
If you haven’t guessed already, this end of the tube is your dragons mouth.
Next up were going to give our dragons a little personality to their face by adding a nose and some eyes. To do this we added two small pompoms at the front edge for a nose, and to medium pom poms to the other side for eyes. I then added googly eyes to the front of the medium pom poms.
I used double sided tape again for this just for speed and mess free crafts (my kids aren’t great at waiting to let things dry!) but you could use glue just as easily.
And there you have it! One fire breathing toilet roll dragon.
Ask little ones to take a big breath and blow through the end and watch as the fire moves as their breath moves through it. (Make sure they take a deep breath and blow as they would a candle and ensure their mouth isn’t right up against the dragon, they will need to be a few cm back for it to work).
My two were obsessed with this and prompting chased each other around the house fighting as dragons. As you can see, mine needed ice breathing dragons as well as fire!!
WHERE TO BUY SUPPLIES
If you don’t already have a healthy stash of craft supplies then you can easily pick up any bits you need from Amazon or eBay which tend to be my go to places. B&M and similar places are also brilliant, but I live in the middle of nowhere so very rarely make it to a store.
I have kids that love making things, so I find it handy to have a good stash of supplies. Here are a few recommendations if you need to stock up. Please note all Amazon links are affiliate links.
