Toddler Crafts – Abstract Mother’s Day Card
A different option to a handprint card, the abstract Mother’s Day card gives little ones more freedom when it comes to decorating pictures which will become a lovely keepsake for any mummy.
WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR MOTHERS DAY CARD
- Painted picures – these can be pre-existing toddler artwork, or you can create some new especially for Mother’s Day. If making them fresh, you will also need paint and paintbrushes.
- Cards & envelopes – you can use folded over card, or specific plain cards you can buy for this purpose.
- Happy Mother’s Day text (or similar that you want to use) – I wrote mine fresh, but you can just as easily print this out in a font that you like
- Double sided sticky tape
- Scissors
WHAT WE DID TO MAKE OUR MOTHERS DAY CARD
First of all we made our pictures we wanted to use as the foundation of our cards. For this the Bear just went a little mad with paint and paintbrushes. This girl really does love to paint!
While she did this, I wrote out the ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ message in calligraphy using ink and a pen. This can be just as easily done on a computer though and printed out in the font of your choice.
We then waited for both the picture and the message to dry while we tidied up a little.
Once dry, trim the edges of the pictures until they make a good fit for the card and fix into place using the double sided sticky tape. As ours was colourful swirls on A4 paper, it trimmed well to wrap around both the front and the back of the card. However, it could have worked just as well mounted on the front.

Next trim the message as you wish. This can be either as one long line of text, or like we did as individual words. Place as you like and again, stick down with the double sided sticky tape.
And there we have it. A card that is completely personal and unique, but is a little bit different to the usual handprint cards. What’s more, it’s a perfect way to use up some additional masterpieces that you may have already at home.
