Free Knitting Pattern! – Baby Mittens
If you follow the blog then you know I am a knitter, there’s something very fulfilling about creating something from scratch and I find it so relaxing to sit down of an evening and knit away. One of my favourite items from the winter was my Rainbow Bobble Hat so I thought I’d share the matching Baby Mittens pattern for any knitters – or wannabe knitters! – to try out themselves.
This pattern is really simple so it’s great for beginners or for something to whip up really quickly.
WHAT YOU NEED
3.5mm needles
4mm needles
Double Knit (DK) wool in 5 colours – I’ve used the colours to match my Rainbow Bobble Hat.
THE PATTERN
3.5 mm cast on 30 stitches in main colour (MC)
R1 = *k1, p1* repeat to end of row – this forms 1×1 rib
R2 – R6 = repeat for a 1×1 rib pattern
Switch to 4mm needles and yarn colour A
R7 = knit
R8 = purl
R9 = knit
R10 = purl
This 4 rows form a stocking stitch pattern
R11 – R14 = repeat stocking stitch pattern in colour B
R15 – R18 = repeat stocking stitch pattern in colour C
R19 – R22 = repeat stocking stitch pattern in colour D
R23 – R26 = repeat stocking stitch pattern in main colour
Shape top – all to be done main colour
R27 = *k3, k2tog* repeat to end
R28 = purl
R29 = *k2, k2tog* repeat to end
R30 = purl
R31 = *k1, k2tog* repeat to end
R32 = purl
R33 = *k2tog* repeat to end (you should now be left with 6 stitches on the needle)
Break off, thread through remaining 6 stitches and pull. Sew up the seam using mattress stitch.
Et viola! You have your first mitten.
Repeat the process again to make the second to the pair and there we have it. Your very own pair of Baby Mittens.
I’d love for you to give the pattern a go yourself and share your works with me over on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and feel free to give me a shout out if you’re stuck on anything.
Good luck and don’t forget to let me know how you get on!
KEY
k = knit
p = purl
k2tog = knit 2 together
