Improving Your Garden Aesthetic With Little Investment

This is of course dependant on the fact that you spend time maintaining it, and perhaps planning new directions for its upkeep and aesthetic from time to time. But for those who enjoy tending to their garden already, is it possible to upgrade your garden aesthetic with little investment? Of course, some investment will be necessary, both in time and supplying materials. But is it possible to craft a beautiful garden that doesn’t quite need thousands of dollars to look good? How about maintaining the garden to avoid the need for future investment? Of course, this might be a challenge to hit two birds with one stone like this, but it’s a healthy challenge that is well-placed in the already difficult focus of restoring and replenishing a garden. Not only can this prove an excellent exercise in frugality, but it can also give you the means to learn new gardening skills, to act within a limit, and to fill your summer with joy. Of course, garden furniture can help a garden look wonderfully visually, even if it’s never put into use. It’s likely that you have garden furniture somewhere in your garden. Unfortunately, if it’s been left out for too long without covers in the winter, or if weather conditions have spurred this on, rust and mold can often enclose the furniture depending on its material. This is where it can be tremendously worthwhile to sell and replace that garden furniture for something much more worthwhile and modern-looking. The sale of the previous items should help displace the cost of new implements, provided you take care of them after they arrive. Second-hand garden furniture is often quite sought after, so you should have no trouble finding a place to offer it. If you feel you can reupholster it, it can also be worth doing that. Taking it to a professional reupholstery surface or simply sanding and varnishing the wood can give it a new lease of life. If you achieve this, hey presto! You have managed to once again texture your garden with something that feels new, something that can help improve your garden aesthetic with its focus. Who knows, this might also translate to more enjoyable summer meals taken outside with the family. Reuse Certain Materials It can also be very worthwhile using odds and ends you’re throwing out or have found around the house to influence your design. Reusing certain materials can go a long way here. For example, it could be that you’re interested in reusing certain materials from around the house. This would seem like a great idea, and it is. You just need to know how to apply it. This can also provide another two-birds-one-stone opportunity. Let us use a specific example to see how this might work. It could be that you have an old shed in the garden. It’s somewhat dangerous due to how long it’s been there. You know storing items inside is tantamount to heavy risk, because it could potentially fall down at any moment without much in the way of a warning.  However, the construction of the shed itself could yield very many materials. First, wooden planks can be sanded, varnished, and potentially used to help add as borders for your flower beds or vegetable patch. Perhaps they can line the garden pathway you’re thinking of creative. Perhaps cut planks could serve as the arms for the novelty scarecrow you hope to make. Reusing certain materials can go a long way to helping you save money. But that might not be all there is. Perhaps slabs providing the floor of the shed could once again remain integrated into the garden path. Perhaps you could use the somewhat disintegrated shell of the shed could now be used as a platform to hold your compost in. This kind of creative thinking can often go a long way when it comes to reusing certain materials, and you’re sure to be proud of yourself for thinking of such solutions. If you look at everything with this in your minds eye, you could implement opportunities much better than this illustrative example we have given you. Moving Items Around Child’s climbing frames, sheds, furniture, they can all be worthwhile to have in your garden, but they can also put plenty of pressure on the grass there. It can sometimes be worthwhile to move these implements around from time to time, to let the ground breathe a little and allow for the greenery to grow back as expected. This is a little change, but if you do this annually or perhaps slightly more frequently, then your turf will need less replacement or extensive healing measures over the years. It’s worth keeping in mind. Upcycle Home Furniture It can sometimes be that we wish to bring implements from the home out into the garden. For example, an old, relatively defunct cabinet or chest of drawers could be used as a potting table in your shed, or perhaps a place where you store all of your plant pots and potential seeds. Having a localized place for your tools like this can be a tremendous benefit. Frame and Define Your Garden It’s often said that gardens are living spaces without walls — but that doesn’t mean you can’t add some subtle structure. Defining different sections of your garden, such as vegetable patches, flower beds, or pathways, can help create a sense of purpose and design without losing the natural beauty. This could be achieved using simple wooden borders, decorative edging, or even low shrubbery. Another worthwhile option is to incorporate garden railings to gently frame areas, guide pathways, or separate sections without closing off space. Using railings can also add a touch of traditional charm while remaining highly practical. The best part is that this approach doesn’t require heavy investment, just a little creativity and thoughtful placement. Bricks come to mind as a solid one. Dug into the garden and then secured with the displaced earth, you could potentially craft beautiful borders around flowers or provide the grounding for the path you hope to build. Even if you do, it’s easy to get swayed and suddenly question all your previous decisions in favour of something you’ve seen on Pinterest or social media.  Try to get a clear vision of what you want, as well as a budget for each item, at the start of the planning process. Then, make a cooling-off rule: if you want something, wait for a week (if time allows). If you still want it, then you can properly consider it.  Sticking to you and your fiancé’s opinions Once you announce you’re getting married, the opinions will start to flow in. Everyone from your parents to your distant cousin will have thoughts on how you should run your big day, and that can be hard to ignore. However, ultimately, it needs to be a day that reflects you and your partner, and also a day where you feel comfortable and happy.  Therefore, make a pact with each other to stick to your opinions, and discuss any potential changes together before you go ahead. By being polite but firm with your loved ones, you can avoid committing to any amendments to your wedding day unless both you and your fiancé are in agreement.  Finding time to step away  Finally, wedding planning takes up a lot of time, and it’s easy to let it seep into every conversation you have. Even if you enjoy the process, you still need a break, or you risk overthinking things and not being able to actually enjoy the day when it arrives.  Try to set dedicated time for wedding planning, so that you can truly embrace it – and then put it away again. By tackling it in little chunks, you’ll stop yourself from getting overwhelmed, as well as keeping that spark of excitement alight. As a mother I am always afraid of getting it wrong and judging by the blurb, it really sounded like the FMC got it really wrong. I was intrigued and couldn’t wait to find out what happened that night. Here’s what I thought. I don’t know why but I had it in my head that I was sitting down to a phycological thriller, but what I got instead was complete investment in a family. Filled with emotion, the themes in The Favourite Child are so relatable that it had me desperate for them to pull through together. I love how vulnerable all the characters were and their very human reactions to their difficult situations. I related to Erica so much as she tried so hard to be everything to everyone, but only succeeding in letting down the people she loves most. The Favourite Child is a story with a very human heart and I absolutely loved getting to know Erica, Andrew, Ben and Mollie. WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT MY SON’S GIRLFRIEND As a mum, this is pretty much my worst nightmare. A phone call in the middle of the night and your child on the run, wanted for murder. Jen’s son’s girlfriend Ella has been found murdered in a way that devastatingly echoes horrors from Jen’s own past. She rushes back to try and find Daniel, she ends up in a web of lies that all seem to be connected. Well written with a great pace, I love that My Son’s Girlfriend is a whodunnit that shies away from the police perspective. Instead Jen is completely blind, trying to piece together Daniels life before the murder and what brought the young couple very much in love, to the edge. Some characters didn’t really have a purpose which left me questioning why they were there in the first place and others were very clearly plot steps such as Daniel’s Dad Andrew and Jen’s university friend Natasha, but you could argue that was purposeful to give a sense of Jen’s tunnel vision which is fully focused on her son. Caroline from HR also ruffled my feathers and I hope that Jen went back to work and submitted a GDPR complaint. You can take the girl out of HR, but you can’t take HR out of the girl…… Was this a little far fetched? Yes it was, but that didn’t stop me having a great time getting lost in the pages of My Son’s Girlfriend. I already jumped on the book tour for both Bloodlust Blues and Bloodlust Bites – the first two books in the Charley Underwood series – so there was no hesitation to do exactly the same for the third book in the series. Book three picks up pretty much exactly where book two finish so there certainly seems to be a lot of action in Crimson and this time it’s ALL personal. In this next book in the series you get to learn more about Charley’s backstory. Finally finding out what really happened to her mum and you really feel for Charley when she comes to realise the truth. Her sense of betrayal by the people she loves lying to her is palpable and my heart broke for her a little. The “family” feels are rife in Bloodlust Curse though and Charley doesn’t stay angry for long. And to be fair she doesn’t really have time to stay angry with dark magic swirling around every corner! The pace was great as usual but I could have done with a little reminder at the beginning of this installment as it literally chucks you straight in, almost as if it was the next chapter and my poor memory isn’t what it used to be. It didn’t take me long until I was back in the rhythm though and following along with some great secondary characters such as Samuel the yummy vampire and Candy the retired stripper who is also a witch. Overall Bloodlust Curse is a lot of fun with characters who are starting to feel like old friends now and is a great addition to what is becoming a fab series. Moel Famau | 2025 Walks

25th January 2025We chose not to have resolutions this year but one of the things that we do want to do is get outdoors more and just explore. The kids are of an age now that they have fallen in love with tech and a lot of their social life is now spent online with friends. To balance that out, we’re going to be trying to get out and about as much as possible as a family. Our first big walk of the year was up Moel Famau – a walk that we have done more than once but is a lovely challenge for us all. I’m not going to go through all the details of the walk and facilities because I have already shared that before in this blog post. Feel free to take a look and check it out.
