Convalescence Chronicles – week one
This time last week I was laid up in bed recovering from gynae surgery. It was planned after being on a rather long waiting list for 5 years, but it all came about rather quickly after being given only 10 days notice with no option to move it, and then a last minute reschedule for another 10 days after that. It seems it was only me that didn’t have the option to reschedule after all….
It means that our summer started incredible with a 10 day holiday in the South of France, and busy after that as we tried to cram in as much family time out and about exploring while we could. It also meant long days on the laptop as I tried to get my day job ready to take some time after surgery to recover.
That’s where I am now. So here’s a little weekly update as to how it’s going to try and keep me sane and give me something to do!
RECOVERY
The first few days were spent in hospital and the next few at home were spent sleeping and walking like John Wayne. After a week though, I have been able to stop painkillers and I am up and about. I still can’t bend, stretch or engage my core in any way due to internal stitches and I will stay that way until around 6-8 weeks apparently. I am also under strict instructions to ignore my body and ensure I rest as although I may feel better and no longer in the same amount as pain as before, there is still a lot of healing to do on the inside.
All in all though, I am feeling so much better than I thought I would.
The silver lining of convalescence is that I have had time to sit back relax, rest and indulge in some hobbies!
READ
This week I have managed to finish one book and then read a second.
The Spell Shop by Sarah Beth Durst
I absolutely loved this book. It was a warm hug between two covers. Filled with new starts, new loves and magic complete with the funniest magical plant I have ever had the pleasure to meet in fiction. I loved the characters as much as the story and it was just so nice. I would most definitely recommend and will 100% be reading again.
Available to buy now on Amazon. Although pricey, I treated myself to the hardcopy as a pre-surgery pick me up.
Wish You Were Here by Philipa Ashley
This one was a really easy summer read. Second change romance set in a rather fabulous travel based backdrop, there’s a really lovely feel of friendship and family alongside romance. This was a charity shop find for me and it will be re-donated now that I’m finished, but it was a nice way to spend a few hours.
Although a charity shop find, I did manage to track it down on Amazon for anyone who wants to take a closer look.
MADE
It feels like ages since I’ve had time to pick up some knitting needles or a crochet hook and this week I have been able to do both!
First up I made this adorable baby hat and two sets of mittens based on this free pattern. Super cute and super quick to make, these will be packed away ready for a friend who will be giving birth in December.
I also came across a crochet along in the miles I have been scrolling on social media this week which I was really excited to jump on board with. @knot_halfbadcrochet is sharing the pattern for an autumn / Halloween themed granny square jumper on Tik Tok square by square. There doesn’t seem to be a regular schedule, but I took the opportunity this week to catch up on the five squares she has shared already and can’t wait to see what she releases next.

WATCHED
The Tower – available on ITVX
While I craft I also watch TV and with the new series of The Tower starting this week, I went back to the beginning and managed to smash all three series in a week. Definitely a luxury of being home all week recovering!
It also helps that the series are really short with only 3 episodes in season 1 and 4 episodes in seasons 2 and 3. I really enjoyed it though, good script and good story to all three, it did a brilliant job of keeping it interesting. Although each series has a stand along focus / main crime, the personal sub-plot of the characters runs throughout.
If you’ve not watched it yet, it’s worth catching up with.
Love is Blind UK – available on Netflix
In complete contrast, I also binged the first series of Love is Blind UK which I had been saving for this week. Yes I know it’s trash but the girls at work got me addicted and it’s such an easy way to pass time when you don’t have the energy to think too much.
It’s a social experiment where single men and women look for love and get engaged, all before meeting in person. Instead they get to know each other by dating in pods, sight unseen.
It’s awfully brilliant, totally addictive and kept me company during my first week.
And that’s pretty much been my week.
Complete with cuddles from the Bo in the day and cuddles with the kids in the evenings, my first week at home has gone really well. I’ve managed to only log onto work twice for a little sneak peak!
