In the Playground with Playmobil
At four, the Bear is now at an age where she is really starting to enjoy small world play. The little conversations the characters in her little worlds have are nothing short of hilarious. When the opportunity came up to try out the Playmobil City Life Children’s Playground from Smyths Toys, I knew that she would love it. It has everything that she loves: bright colours, little people, cute animals and plenty for them all to do. This is what we thought.
PLAYMOBIL CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND – GETTING SET UP
This is our first Playmobil set and I’m not ashamed to say that I was initially a little daunted by the sheer volume of pieces that were included in the set.
However – thanks to the wonderfully clear booklet that was included in the box – I needn’t have worried. Everything came together with the minimum of effort as all the pieces very easily clicked together to make up a rather wonderful playground.
Included in the set is a slide and skate park (complete with picnic area), a swing set, a swing carousel and a sandcastle. There is so much more included though in all the tiny little details. A baby in a pram, a picnic basket along with BBQ with food, a 6 pack of drinks, a bucket and spade, a bike, scooter and skateboard. All these tiny details make up a complete day out for Playmobil day of fun.
TIME TO PLAY
After watching every click of construction, the Bear was desperate to get her hands on this set. Once everything was assembled, she literally sat at the table for HOURS as she played. First, she systematically made every character enjoy every aspect of the playset before the conversations started.
From what I could gather: (1) the baby needed to sleep as she was very very tired, (2) the swings were lots of fun but they all needed to be good and take turns, (3) everyone got very thirsty at one point and all needed to sit down for a drink, (4) they needed to not be greedy and share.
It is amazing listening in on her play in this way. Even if it is a little surreal to hear the things I say to her coming out as she chats amongst her toys!
PLAYMOBIL – THE VERDICT
This is our first Playmobil set, and I have to say that I wouldn’t hesitate to get another. I was astounded by the level of detail which went into the playground set and it is this detail that our two loved. They literally spent all afternoon cooking food on the BBQ, playing on the swings, swapping between bikes, skateboards and scooters, spinning the carousel as well as moving the little squirrels, birds and butterflies around from tree to tree.
I love that this is powered by creativity. No tech, no screens, no power cables! Looking at the range online, there is so much you can add to your sets. All are interchangeable and build up a wonderful world of play were the only limit in their imagination. I can see Playmobil sitting at the centre of children’s small world play, being added to each Christmas and each birthday.
